Atlético Madrid defender Diego Godín “felt ill” after hearing about Luis Suárez injury
Atlético Madrid defender Diego Godín has admitted he “felt ill” after hearing about Luis Suárez’ injury.
The Liverpool forward has been forced to undergo a knee operation and is now a doubt for next month’s World Cup.
Godín, who has been capped 76 times by Uruguay, is confident that Suárez will make it, but notes his initial reaction to the injury was one of shock.
"When I heard [about Suárez] I said 'no, not now, please'," said Godín, as reported by Sky Sports.
"The truth is that I felt ill, it is something that nobody expected... he is our figurehead, our star.
"Now what remains is for us to support him. I've talked to him and he is very optimistic."
Uruguay have been drawn in Group D alongside Costa Rica, England and Italy. Los Charrúas start their campaign against Costa Rica at the Castelão on 14 June.
