Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis has given up on the hope of representing Brazil in the World Cup this year, instead focussing on relaxation following a highly successful club campaign with the Spanish side this term.

The left back, who helped his team win La Liga for the first time since 1996 and who narrowly missed out on Champions League glory against Real Madrid at the weekend, told Football Espana: “Sometimes I don’t understand the criteria for picking a national team.”

“I don’t dream of winning the World Cup. I’m on vacation. I have many friends there, especially (fellow left backs) Marcelo and Maxwell.”

Luis is part of a seven man standby list in the event of any injuries, but doesn’t hold out any hope of lining up on home soil for Selecao this summer: “I really hope Brazil can win because the Brazilian people deserve it.”

“They’re a suffering people who have to put of with a lot from the government and they deserve this joy.”
