Fluminense striker Walter scored 13 goals in the Brasileirão last season with Goiás and last night he scored his first Brasileirão goals for his new club as they crushed São Paulo 5-2.

Walter had failed to find the net in his four previous appearances but when he was handed his first start last night, he did not disappoint and bagged a brace to help Flu secure another three points.

After the game the 24-year-old spoke to Lancenet and admitted he was delighted to silence some of his critics.

“I am very happy with the goals,” said a pleased Walter.

“I have to thank my mother, my wife, my daughter because they are saying to a lot of people ‘Oh, Walter said this, said that,’ and every day I show that I have quality to be here at Fluminense. I’m shutting up many people.”

Walter was handed his opportunity due to main forward and Brazil international Fred serving a suspension and the 24-year-old was surprised to get the opportunity so quickly.

He added: “I knew that this chance could happen in the last two rounds, but because Fred was suspended that chance came faster than expected. I was very concentrated and thank god everything went well.”

Next up for Flu is an away fixture against Bahia where Walter will hope to be among the goals again.
