Palmeiras have announced that Argentine coach Ricardo Gareca is to be their new manager, two weeks after getting rid of Gilson Kleina.

Gareca, who was last in charge at Velez Sarsfield in his homeland until last year, was chosen ahead of potential candidates Vanderley Luxemburgo and Dorival Junior as the Palmeiras board keep an eye on the purse strings at the Allianz Parque stadium.

Gareca made 20 appearances for Argentina in the 1980s and played his entire club career in the country. His record at managerial level is decent and includes two championships at Velez in 2009 and again two years later.

He replaces Kleina, who led Palmeiras back into the top flight in Brazil following their 2012 relegation and has been given a contract until June of next year.

Whether that period is seen out by Gareca remains to be seen, however, as Brazilian clubs have been swatting away their head coaches with alarming consistency this term already.
