Brazilian Juninho Pernambucano has claimed that his former club Lyon are interested in offering him the manager’s position.

The 39-year-old spent eight years with the French side and was an iconic figure during the successful era between 2002 and 2008.

Renown for his set piece prowess, Juninho has always insisted he wanted to become a coach and it seems his first position may be at his former club.

The Brazilian told RMC about his conversation with Lyon’s president Jean-Michel Aulas.

Sky Sports quoted Juninho, he said: “Mr Aulas said, ‘you are one of three or four names we are thinking about. We will come back in a week or 10 days to discuss again’.

“I was not expecting that call from the president.

“I have never hidden the fact that I want to continue in football as a coach. I think I could do it. I need time to think. We will talk again next week.”

After only retiring from professional football in February of this year, Juninho will now face an anxious wait to discover if he has been given an incredibly opportunity to manage his old club.

He and Lyon fans all over the world will await more news next week.
