Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo insists only a strong collective effort from Nigeira will stifle Lionel Messi
Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo is confident that Nigeria can stop Lionel Messi at this summer’s World Cup.
The Super Eagles have been drawn alongside Argentina in Group F and face them in what a could be a decisive third match.
Omeruo insists Nigeria must keep a clean sheet to have a chance of stopping Argentina and believes they can collectively stifle Messi.
“I’m really looking forward to the game against Argentina,” he told FIFA.com. “We will try as much as possible to keep a clean sheet. It will be difficult but we have to do that.
“They are the best players in the world and we have to show our quality by standing up to them. We will first of all have to make sure we get maximum points from the first two games.
“I watch him [Messi] a lot on TV. It’s going to be a team effort to try and stop him. Everyone will have to be positive and 100 per cent focused on the game.”
Omeruo, who has been capped 14 times by Nigeria, ended the season on loan at Middlesbrough, where he made 14 appearances.
