Bayern Munich have confirmed that midfielder Thiago has suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee problem.

In a statement, the club confirmed that the 23 year-old requires surgery to correct the issue and, as a result, is set to miss next month’s World Cup.

“[Thiago] has again sustained a partial rupture to his intra-articular ligament and will undergo surgery soon," read the Bayern Munich statement, as reported by UEFA.com.

Thiago, who is the son of former Brazil international Mazinho, had been selected by Spain head coach Vicente del Bosque in his provisional squad. The San Pietro Vernotico native is not, however, expected to be replaced.
