Fluminense defender Gum reckons that his team need to up their performance levels if they are to in with a shout of a respectable league position this season, especially considering they escaped relegation last term by virtue of a controversial court case for Portuguesa, who eventually went down to Serie B.

Gum, full name Wellington Pereira Rodrigues, has been at the Rio de Janeiro club since 2009 and has won the Campeonato Brasileirao twice in that time (in 2010 and 2012), and as such, expects Fluminense to be living at the top of the table.

After losing 2-1 to Vitoria at the weekend, Gum said: “Our team did not really have a good game. We did not deliver. Vitoria has a fast team and went ahead in the game so it was difficult to get a result.”

Fluminense’s next game is simply huge; they face off at the Maracana against Flamengo on Sunday afternoon, with the winners assured of a place high up the championship table after four league games of this already intriguing season.
