Brazil international Marcelo has refused to blame Real Madrid’s mid-week Champions League exploits for their 2-2 draw with Valencia.

Los Merengues defeated Bayern Munich on Tuesday night to progress into the Champions League final, but their surprise setback against Valencia has hampered their pursuit of the La Liga title.

“It had nothing to do with wear from the Champions League,” he told AS.

“We have given everything but we couldn’t win, but at least we drew.

“We don’t look at the matches of other teams. Now we have to win ours anyway. Today we had to win and we couldn’t.

“The League is a very tough tournament. Everything can change at any time. We had an opportunity to close the gap but we’ve failed.”
