Leonardo: Pelé, Zico, Socrates and Ronaldo were all better than Neymar
Former Paris Saint Germain sporting director recently discussed the Brazilian national team with Inside Spanish Football and feels that Barcelona winger Neymar will not live up to the legends that preceded him.
Leonardo doesn’t feel that Neymar will be the stand-out performer at this year’s World Cup.
“Brazil has always reached the World Cup with the likes of Garrincha, Pelé, Zico and Socrates, Romario and Bebeto; then Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo. “
“I don’t see Neymar, in this World Cup, reaching the level of those players. He’s not as strong as those that we are used to seeing.”
“It’s a unique occasion for him, a World Cup in Brazil, he can make his mark. It would be a high point in his career. He played very well in Brazil and in Barcelona he’s doing well,” said the 44-year-old.
Leonardo was recently banned for shoving a referee and explained why he chose to resign as a consequence.
“I left PSG for a very personal matter, a suspension that I consider totally unfair. I want to win this battle that will never end and free myself from it. After that I’ll see what I’ll do.”
“I could’ve been the manager of PSG after Carlo Ancelotti requested to leave, but with this suspension I couldn’t be on the bench or in the dressing room, nor could I sign a contract. A lot of things are prohibited,” completed the 1994 World Cup winner.
