Santos attacker Thiago Ribeiro has backed new teammate Leandro Damiao to rediscover the form that had initially linked him with moves to several big European clubs only a short while ago, when he was plying his trade at Internacional.

Ribeiro, 28, is not alarmed by Damiao’s lack of goals in his short time at Santos and believes the striker is contributing in other facets of the game.

“Damiao is an important player for us. It is normal for there to be a recovery when goals are not coming,” Ribeiro told Lance.

“Damiao’s compensation has been important in other areas, assisting and creating spaces. The players on the pich can see his importance to the team.”

Leandro has seen his World Cup dreams fall away in the past year or so, with Brazil set to leave him out in favour of Atletico Mineiro hitman Jo.
