Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has explained why he started Diego in Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg draw against Chelsea.
The Brazilian, who scored against Barcelona in the quarter-finals, was surprisingly selected ahead of David Villa.
“I wanted to have more options in midfield [by starting Diego there], to assist [Diego] Costa," Simeone told UEFA.com. "I think we"re looking for alternatives. [José] Sosa did well, Arda [Turan] did well.
"In the end it was 0-0. It was an intense game with everybody fighting to get through to the final, but Chelsea have the advantage with this draw."
