Brazilian defender Emerson Conceicao has been praised by his new coach at Atletico Mineiro, Paulo Autori, after making his debut for the club in a goalless draw with Coninthians at the weekend- the first round of fixtures in the Serie A calendar.

Emerson, 28, has been away from his native land since 2007, following spells in Europe with Lille in France, Benfica in Portugal and trabzonspor in Turkey; his most recent employment was at French club Stade Rennes.

Speaking on lancenet.com, coach Autori had the following to say about his new left back: “This is normal (a quiet debut), he is returning to Brazilian football.”

“But he is a player that moves very easily, back and forth very fast and he helps alot.”

In a bullish statement about Mineiro’s season expectations, Emerson himself said: “I am happy for the debut, it’s all thanks to my complanions. We did our utmost best, but the goal of three points didn’t come, now we have to work harder to win the Copa Libertadores.”

Atletico are the tournament’s defending champions and have already qualified for the knockout stages, where they will face Atletico National on Thursday.
