The hosts, who won the title in 2012, had initially finished in the relegation zone last season, but found themselves reinstated after Portuguesa were docked four points for naming a suspended player as a substitute.

Fluminense’s participation in this year’s Brasileirão is controversial, as a result, but a comfortable 3-0 victory suggested that at least in terms of talent, they are worthy of their place.

Figueirense may have suffered a rude awakening to life in the top flight, but fellow newly-promoted sides Palmeiras, Sport Recife and Chapecoense all faired better.

The latter two outfits drew 1-1 and 0-0 against Santos and Coritiba respectively, while late goals from Leandro and Alan Kardec gave Palmeiras a 2-1 win at Criciúma.

Two of the Verdão’s main adversaries, São Paulo and Corinthians, also started impressively. The latter held Atlético Mineiro to a 0-0 draw, while São Paulo secured arguably the most eye catching result of the weekend – a 3-0 win against Botafogo.

Vágner Mancini’s side have already crashed out of the Copa Libertadores and though the scoreline slightly flattered the hosts, for whom Alexandre Pato impressed, it was yet another setback in what has so far been a disappointing season.

Atlético Paranaense and Flamengo also surprisingly failed to make it through the Copa Libertadores group stage, though have at least started their respective domestic campaigns in a more positive fashion.

A goal from young defender Draúsio gave the Furacão an impressive 1-0 victory over last season’s runners up Grêmio, while Flamengo were thwarted by an inspired performance from goalkeeper Renan, as they drew 0-0 with Goiás.

Elsewhere, holders Cruzeiro enjoyed better fortune, with Marcelo Martins Moreno netting in the last minute to secure a 2-1 win at Bahia and Internacional defeated Vitória 1-0.
