The second division match was abandoned after just 16 minutes when a court official turned up with a ruling stating that Portuguesa must play in the top division.

Portuguesa were relegated last season after being deducted four points for fielding an ineligible player, something which saw Fluminense, one of Rio de Janeiro’s biggest cubs, reinstated to the top flight.

The club filed a lawsuit challenging the ruling.

Portuguesa told the match officials of the latest court ruling. Despite being instructed to keep playing, the Portuguesa players left the pitch with the game at 0-0.

The referee waited for 30 minutes before calling the game off.

Joinville president Nereu Martinelli told local media: “This is not our problem. Now it’s up to the federation to solve this.”

The game was one of those in the first round of this season’s fixtures and it now remains unclear how the opening fixtures will be affected.
