Atletico Madrid moved a step closer to securing a first La Liga crown since 1996 with a routine 2-0 home victoy against Elche on friday evening, both goals coming from Brazilian players.

Selecao hopeful Miranda Atletico eased nerves with an opener after 72 minutes against the strugglers and serial goalscorer Diego Costa wrapped up the three points with a penalty in the dying minutes of the game.

The result sees the capital club moves the six and seven points clear of title rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona with only four games remaining, both rivals have a game in hand as well.

And any lingering doubts about Brazil-born Costa’s fitness ahead of the crucial Champions League Semi Final with Chelsea seem to have abated after he completed 90 minutes for the second match in a row.

Filipe Luis, also in contention to make Brazil’s World Cup squad, played the whole game, while midfielder Diego came off the bench to play half an hour.
