Potential new Italy cap Romulo has dismissed any doubt as to his national allegiances going forward, having never had the chance to represent the country of his birth, Brazil.

The Fiorentina utility man, who has impressed on loan at Verona this season, told Globo that a call from Azzuri head coach Cesare Prandelli meant that any future Selecao involvement would be rendered meaningless.

“When Prandelli talked to me the first time, he asked me if I felt honoured to wear the shirt of Italy. He called me, and I accepted, knowing that responsibility.”

“From my point of view, playing for Brazil in the future would betray the Italian national team. Prandelli is a coach who cares much for the country, the culture, the origins.”

“And from the moment I took over this responsibility to accept the call from Italy, I will represent this country.”

26 year-old Romulo played for Cruzeiro in his country of birth until a transfer to Fiorentina in 2011, for whom he has played 30 times.
