Argentina are the latest national team to suffer panic after one of their expected squad members was injured for his club at the weekend, putting his participation in doubt with less than two months to go until the big kick-off.

Fernando Gago, who has enjoyed a recall to the Argentine set-up in recent times, took a knock to his left knee on Sunday whilst playing for club side Boca Juniors against Santa Fe.

And now the 28 year-old ex-Real Madrid midfielder, who has won 47 caps, could miss this summer’s showpiece event.

His club made a statement on the matter on their official website: “The midfielder suffered a grade two sprain to the left knee, with partial lesion of the medial collateral ligament, and will be immobilised for 15 days. The estimated recovery time is 60 days.”

With the tournament starting on June 12, Gago will need to display great powers of recovery in order to make the World Cup.
