Flamengo won the carioca state championship by virtue of having the best record in the league stages after another 1-1 draw with Vasco da Gama in the second leg of the final at the Maracana on Sunday evening.

The Rio de Janeiro teams produced the same scoreline in the first leg and vasco were actually on the verge of taking the title until a last gasp equaliser from their opponents.

Douglas put Vasco ahead in the 76th minute with a penalty to put them within touching distance of the regional championship but a 90th minute leveller from Araujo brought Flamengo their 33rd Carioca triumph to the delight of their fans; the team had last week gone out of the Copa Libertadores in the group stages and so today’s glory will serve as something of a tonic ahead of the Brazilian national leagues starting next weekend.
