Brazil star Neymar has congratulated Champions League quarter final conquerors Atletico Madrid after the Catalan side were dumped out of the tournament at the earliest stage since 2007.

A 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal from Koke, kncked out Barca to continue a season of underwhelm both on and off the pitch; they still have La Liga and the Copa del Rey to play for but a severe disappointment will be felt after last night’s result.

Neymar told reporters after the match: “The truth is we started the match badly. In the first 20 minutes we conceded and that made the match difficult.”

“We can only congratulate them. They started the two games better. Both in the first leg and the return game, it was difficult to break them down and they just have to be congratulated.”

“We have the Copa del Rey and La Liga left and we have to try. You have to keep your head up. Life goes on. We feel sad, losing is not easy.”
