Cruzeiro kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the Copa Libertadores knock-out stages on Thursday night with an impressive 2-0 away win over Universidad de Chile.

The hosts were top prior to the match but the Brazilian side showing great spirit to come away with a victory which now gives them a fighting chance of making the last-16.

A win was required for Cruzeiro in Group 5 and after just 16 minutes Bruno Rodrigo gave them the lead.

Dagoberto stood over a free kick and his ball in was headed in by Rodrigo to give the Brazilians the perfect start in Chile.

It was imperative that Raposa didn’t give away their lead before half time and in fact they went one better by doubling it.

It was Paraguayan defender Miguel Samudio who extended Cruzeiro’s advantage, as he finished off a wonderful team move following Ricardo Goulart’s pass.

And that was enough for the Brazilian as they held on for a massive win, although it wasn’t without some drama in the final ten minutes as Universidad’s Matias Caruzzo was given a red card before goalscorer Samudio earned his marching orders as well.

The three points were the most important though and Cruzeiro now host bottom of the table Real Garcilaso next week knowing a win should be enough to see them to qualify from the group.
