Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has praised midfielder Diego after he scored in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Barcelona.

The former Brazil international, who was brought on to replace the injured Diego Costa, netted what could prove to be a priceless away goal, as Atlético secured an impressive first leg draw in their Champions League quarter-final.

"I am really happy for Diego and for the goal he scored tonight," Simeone told UEFA.com. "He needed that. He came on in a very important moment in the game. He will be fundamental for us from now until the end of the season."

The Argentinian tactician also spoke about the loss of Costa and admits it is currently unclear how long the forward will be out for.

"Diego Costa did not want to come off the pitch. We will see what [type of injury] he has tomorrow – we are hoping for the best."
