Atlético Madrid full back Filipe Luís has been comparing team mate Diego Costa and midweek opponent Lionel Messi ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona.

The two South American born stars have been shining lights for their clubs this season, Messi again like always but Costa’s rise to fame wasn’t anticipated.

The Brazilian born Spanish resident ended the 2012/13 season fantastically but not many would have predicted that Costa would have 25 La Liga goals already this season.

And Filipe Luís has been talking about why Costa is so good, AS quoted the full back.

“Nothing surprises me. He’s not scared and has gone through a lot to get where he is,” said Filipe Luís of his team mate Costa.

“These people see the future as challenges. On the pitch he is a leader, he’s perfect for the system we have.”

And how do Messi and Costa compare? One difference Filipe Luís believes is that the Brazilian has had to work and fight to reach his current level of play where as Messi had the talent anyway.

Filipe Luís added: “Messi is on course to be the best player ever. He’s been injured and now he’s better than he was.

“Costa fights game upon game and scores more and more goals. They’re different, one is talent and the other is fight and perseverance, Messi is more individual and Costa is more of a team player, he makes the side play better.”
