A bizarre story involving the enigmatic AC Milan forward Mario Balotelli moving to Brazilian side Flamengo has been squashed by the president of the Rio de Janeiro club.

Earlier this week news broke that Adidas may fund a move for the Italian forward to move to Flamengo after the World Cup – the famous sponsor having the money and power to do so.

However, Flamengo’s president Eduardo Bandeira rubbished those claims when he spoke to Radio Globo recently.

English website Football Direct News quoted the views of Bandeira, he said: “The club are not dealing with something like this, I find it hard that Adidas is dealing alone on such a thing.”

The initial speculation was almost certainly just that, speculation, but the fact that Flamengo’s president has felt the need to speak out shows the height at which the rumour have reached.

Although Mario Balotelli in a Flamengo shirt could have been a wonderful image, if not an unusual one, it will almost certainly remain as one of the strangest rumours in recent memory.
