The spoils were shared in the first leg of the second semi final in the Carioca state championship between great rivals Vasco da Gama and Fluminense on Thursday evening. Played at the iconic Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, the sides cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw, with the second leg to come in two days’ time.

Brazil striker Fred, whom many believe will be leading the country’s attack at the upcoming World Cup this summer, gave Fluminense the lead with a 55th minute goal, only to see it negated by a strike from Vasco’s Thalles in the 66th minute.

Both sides have a rich history in the Carioca, with Fluminense winning it 31 times and Vasco triumphing on 22 occasions.

The winners of the tie are most likely to play Flamengo in the final after they won the first leg of the other semi 3-0 away to Cabofriense.
