The Italian Football Federation [FIGC] are exploring the possibility of Internazionale defender Jonathan representing Italy at international level, according to reports.

Globoesporte claims that the FIGC have looked into the legal requirements needed to have the Brazilian-born wing-back available for selection, after the 28 year-old suggested he would be interested in playing for the Azzurri at this summer’s World Cup.

With regular full-back Christian Maggio struggling through injury, their could be an opening for Jonathan, who has duel nationality, in Italy head coach Cesare Prandelli’s plans.

The tactician has, however, suggested in recent weeks that selecting nationalised players is not necessarily a priority, after reports claimed Hellas Verona midfielder Rômulo – also Brazil born – could be under consideration.
