Friday’s Champions League quarter-final draw threw up a number of interesting fixtures, none more so than Manchester United against Bayern Munich, in a fixture which boasts plenty of history.
The clash is a repeat of the 1999 final which the Red Devils won thanks to late goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
In 2010, however, it was the Bavarian outfit who came out on top at the quarter-final stage of the competition. An aggregate score of 4-4 saw the German champions advance courtesy of away goals.
Owing to suspension, Bayern Munich defender Dante will not be part of the Bayern side that visit Old Trafford for the first-leg.
“At this stage of the Champions League we just have great teams. Any team we face at this stage would be tricky. Manchester United is a team with great tradition and even though they’re not at their best in the Premier League, they are still an excellent team. I will not play in the first game as I am suspended because of yellow cards, but I have confidence that we will do well in both matches,” said the 30-year-old.
Rafinha, however, will expect to be involved in the clash on April 1.
“Manchester United are a great team and even in their current position in the Premier League, we can’t think about going soft on them. They will be two very difficult and complicated games. Their team has a lot of experience and tradition in the competition. With this, we have to be ready and at our best in these two matches in order to qualify for the semi-finals,” said the 28-year-old.
