Flamengo’s hopes of reaching the Copa Libertadores knock-out phase hang by a thread after they were beaten on Wednesday by Bolívar.

Juan Carlos Arce scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after just five minutes after young defender Samir had given away the spot kick.

The Brazilian’s tried in vain to respond and Lucas Mugni, Paulinho and Alecsandro were all substituted on in the second half in an attempt to force an equalising goal but it wasn’t forthcoming.

And therefore it looks almost certain that Flamengo will now fail to qualify as one of the top two teams.

They are currently bottom of Group 7 with four points and are away to Emelec next, who sit second in the table with a two-point advantage of Flamengo.

The Brazilian giants need to win both of their remaining two matches to go through but it looks a tall order for the Rio de Janeiro team.
