Jefferson was voted man of the match following Botafogo’s 1-0 win over Independiente on Tuesday night in the Copa Libertadores but he was just relieved to play his part in the win.

The club captain helped his team earn a massive three points by keeping a vital clean sheet. He made some excellent saves throughout but after the game he praised his team mates.

Jefferson’s interview with Fox Sports was quoted by Lancenet, the goalkeeper said: “I contributed a little to this victory but we must congratulate the whole group.

“It was a victory achieved and we know the importance of this game and it was very difficult.

“Independiente del Valle has a good team. We played a balanced match. We played a good first half but we allowed them into our field during the second period.”

Botafogo were on the back foot during the second half but they could be thankful to Jefferson for bailing them out and they now look favourites to top Group 2 and progress through to the knock-out stages.
