Brazil have remained in eighth position in FIFA’s latest world rankings after they were announced today. The World Cup hosts, who haven’t played a competitive game in almost four years, save for the Confederations Cup in 2013, are still behind three continental rivals in the list as the sport’s biggest tournament looms large.

World champions Spain unsurprisingly top the rankings, ahead of fellow World Cup favourites Germany and Argentina and closely followed by Portugal, Colombia and Uruguay.

The rankings have often been criticised as not offering a true reflection of the quality of international teams but, judging by the current standings, any of the top 10 could realistically triumph this summer, perhaps apart from seventh-placed Switzerland, with respect.

Italy and Belgium occupy the other leading posotions and it would take a brave soul to back against any of these countries to be victorious in Rio de Janeiro come July 13 this year.
