Brazil superstar Pele has courted some controversy on an ambassadorial visit to Algeria by telling their fans and players not to expect to make a big impression at this summer’s World Cup in his homeland.
The King, arguably football’s most famous face, shocked Algerians and wrote off their chances of getting out of their group at the tournament when pressed about his opinions: “I would like to tell you the truth.”
“If you compare the experience of the Algerian players to that of Argentina or Italy, it is difficult to think that Algeria will get anywhere far at the upcoming World Cup in Brazil.”
Algeria will line up in Group H of the competition against Belgium, Russia and South Korea, playing Fabio Capello’s Russia in their first game in Belo Horizonte on June 17.
