Costa Rica are outsiders to progress to the tournament’s knockout stages after being drawn in World Cup Group D along with England, Italy and Uruguay but the national team’s assistant manager is relishing the challenge.

“We knew that it was going to be a hard group but being a group with three former World Cup winners is something big,” Paolo Wanchope told Sky Sports News.

“But we will give it a try – the pressure is on the other three teams and our players are looking forward to that challenge during the summer.”

Costa Rica face Uruguay in their opening World Cup fixture in Fortaleza on June 14 and the former Derby County and Manchester City striker says that any confidence on the part of their oponents suits his country right down to the ground.

“It’s good that they feel like that and as I said before the pressure is on them. We have good players, great talents and I think they are looking forward to playing in that game.”
