Serie A side Botafogo laboured to a 2-2 draw against bottom side Audax Rio in the Campeonato Carioca on Thursday evening at the Estadio Proletario to leave them with almost half the points of city rivals and league leaders Flamengo.

Twice they had the lead and twice they were pegged back by Audax, who have only picked up seven points from 12 games in the championship thus far.

Fogao took the lead in the 26th minute through Argentine striker Juan Carlos Ferreyra. The new signing has been impressive for Botafogo so far, managing a healthy return in the early days of his new surroundings.

A leveller from Audax through Willian was tempered by a second half goal from midfielder Marcelo Matteos. Unfortunately for the away side the second equaliser, through Washington, left the game all square.

Botafogo’s next fixture is on Sunday against huge rivals and aforementioned Carioca leaders Flamengo in a game they simply have to win to cling onto any hope of State success.
