Fernandinho left a lasting impression on Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari yesterday and the Manchester City midfielder was happy to impress.

The 28-year-old scored the fourth in yesterday’s 5-0 victory over South Africa at Soccer City in Johannesburg, his first senior goal for his country.

It was Fernandinho’s first opportunity with Brazil since 2012 and the former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder expressed his delight at featuring for Seleção again.

The Man City man said after the game to Globo: “It’s not often a defensive midfielder gets to score goals.

“But you can not judge me on this, I will be evaluated for 90 minutes over the whole game.

“My happiness is great because it’s my first goal in the national team shirt. Now we’ll have to wait and see if my name is on the shortlist for the World Cup.”

Scolari praised the midfielder after the game and complimented his versatility to be able to play different positions. Fernandinho now has an anxious wait to see if he is selected in the final Brazil World Cup squad.
