Brazilian Melo discusses his 2010 World Cup mistake

A bad moment for Melo and Brazil - Action Images

Felipe Melo took the brunt of the blame when Brazil exited the 2010 World Cup after being beaten by Holland and the Galatasaray midfielder admits it is a match which fills him with sadness.

Melo has been speaking with Globo Esporte and also revealed that he and club team mate Wesley Sneijder have never talked about that game.

“Disappointment? No. It was great sadness, but that has been overcome,” said the 30-year-old.

“I have never seen the game and have never had the mood to watch, because it's something I do not like to remember. But it happens, move forward.

“People criticise, and soon after it comes out from FIFA that Felipe Melo was voted the most versatile player with the highest passes.

“If you want to criticize me, you can criticize me without any problem."

In the 2-1 World Cup defeat Melo scored an own goal before Sneijder headed in the winner and the Brazilian admits he is close friends with the Dutchman.

The 30-year-old added: “He is a very good guy. We did not lose to Sneijder in the Cup, but to Holland.

“At the club, I have a few close colleagues, and Sneijder is one of them.

“We're always together at the club, but outside is a little difficult, because he lives in downtown Istanbul. But we're closer than just co-workers.

“No (he hasn’t spoken about the game), I never talked about it. He knows me well, and I never gave intimacy for him to play with it.

“The defeat marked me a lot, because it was unfair. But football is not logical.”
