Atlético Paranaense fell to defeat in the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday night as Vélez Sarsfield overcame them 2-0 in Group 1.

The Argentine team was able to score once in the each half to secure maximum points and move clear in the Group with Atlético PR dropping to 3rd in the table.

The first half was poor but defender Fernando Tobio was able to open the scoring for El Fortin in the 38th minute when his close range effort hit the crossbar and landed over the line following a corner.

With Atlético PR chasing the game in the second half they were eventually caught on the counter attack.

They lost the ball just inside their own half and Lucas Romero passed across goal for Lucas Pratto to slot past keeper Wéverton.

Former Arsenal midfielder Fran Mérida was involved for the visitors but unimpressed whilst once again Miguel Ángel Portugal decided to introduce Adriano from the bench.

The 32-year-old would have liked to be introduced before Vélez scored their second goal but was resigned to a seven minute cameo this time around.

Again he failed to make a significant impression but he and Atlético PR will hope to put it right next time in the Copa Libertadores.

On the early hours of March 15th UK time they make the trip to Peru to play Universitario de Deportes in the third match of Group 1.
