The Brazil international missed his second penalty in 2014 in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Botafogo but his coach has come out in support of his player.
It was already 3-0 to Botafogo when the referee awarded Fluminense a penalty following Dankler’s handball in the area.
Fred stepped up to take the spot-kick, stuttering as he usually does in his run up. Botafogo shot-stopper Heilton Leite was wise to this and saved the striker’s effort.
The referee, however, ordered a retake as Leite had strayed from his line but, again, the Botafogo keeper guessed the right way.
The number 9 missed a penalty against Boavista last week when he hit the bar from the twelve-yard spot.
Despite this, Renato Gaúcho expects him to take the next one.
“I’ll talk with Fred and if he’s not confident then we’ll make a change but if he is then he’ll take our next penalty. The fans can relax, I’ll talk to him.”
