The Corinthians had scored first by the usual Carlitos Tevez in the first half, and the Pacaembu was already celebrating the title. In the second half though, Inter’s Rafael Sobis shut the Fiel quiet after his equalizer. The game (and the championship?) changed fate when at the 73th minute Tinga was stopped irregularly in the zone by Corinthians’s goalie Fabio Costa. Not only the international referee Marcio Rezende de Freitas failed to grant the obvious penalty, but he gave the Inter midfielder a second yellow card which sent him off the field. Marcio Rezende later admitted he had committed an error after viewing the game images. Despite a deceiving tie game, the Corinthians remain heavy favourites for the title.
The other suspense that is taking shape for the end of the season concerns the 4th place which grants a ticket for the next Copa dos Libertadores. Fluminense has been struggling for the few last games, and took another bashing in Fortaleza, which Palmeiras scored no less than 6 versus Ponte Preta. Currently one point behind, Palmeiras will receive Fluminense for the last game.
As individual numbers are concerned, Romario hit again, this time twice. The ever-young 39 years old is now only 1 goal behind Paysandu’s Robson in the race for the league’s best scorer.
