Saturday’s 3-0 victory moved the Rubronegro to 25 points and virtually guaranteed them qualification to the final phase of the competition.

Flamengo coach Jayme de Almeida with the victory but is likely to be hoping that Fluminense slip up against Botafogo on Sunday as that would leave his side with a clear advantage at the top of the standings.

“Since the start of the championship we’ve been trying to be up there at the top. There are other teams like Vasco and Fluminense but we’re trying to do our part. We will see what happens on Sunday but I think we’re doing well and getting the points we should be. We’re close to qualifying,” he said.

Almeida hopes that his side repeat their strong performance when they meet Emelec of Ecuador in Wednesday’s Copa Libertadores clash.

“The team played well and this will give us confidence on Wednesday. It won’t be an easy game but if the team performs as expected, stays relaxed and works well with the ball then we’ll create a lot of opportunities.”
