Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva is ahead of schedule after suffering a serious knee injury against Aston Villa in January.

It was initally feared that the Brazilian midfielder would be out for over two months with medial collateral ligament damage but he is making a remarkable recovery.

The Liverpool Echo have spoke with the Reds head of performance Glen Driscoll. He confirmed that after just three and half weeks Lucas is back running again.

Driscoll said: “Lucas Leiva was due to be in a brace for six weeks, according to specialists’ opinion.

“But yesterday he was outside running just over three weeks in, which is fantastic and shows just how ahead of schedule he is.”

Two of the Brazilian’s other Liverpool team mates have been keeping him company on the treatment table.

José Enrique and Mahadou Sakho are injured too but Driscoll isn’t putting a date down for when Lucas and his team mates should return yet.

He added: “Without providing specific dates I would hope that by the end of the month we should start to get the likes of José, Lucas and Sakho back.”

Positive news for the 27-year-old who will hope to get himself back in Liverpool’s team to help them with their season aims.
