Atletico Madrid fans shouted racial abuse at the 25-year-old during Real’s 3-0 victory is the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg.

The full-back, however, says he remains unaffected by the incident.

“Even though this is not the first time it happens I can promise you that we are stronger than any kind of racism. This will never affect me or my family,” the Brazilian said via his Twitter account.

In 2011, Marcelo was at the centre of racial controversy after he was the target of alleged racist remarks by Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets. The Spanish international was later cleared.

Atletico are also no strangers to this kind of controversy. In 2008 they were ordered to play a Champions League match against PSV behind closed doors following crowd trouble and allegations of racist abuse in a previous match against Marseille.
