Wallyson scored a hat-trick on Wednesday night to delight the crowd at the Maracanã.

Botafogo have made the Copa Libertadores group stages after defeating Deportivo Quito 4-0 in Rio de Janeiro to win 4-1 on aggregate.

Victor Estupinan’s goal in Quito had given the Ecuadorians an edge entering the game at the Maracanã but Botafogo remained favourites due in part to a partisan crowd in Rio de Janeiro and in part to the fact that Deportivo were missing some key players due to unpaid wages.

The Brazilian side dominated possession throughout the match but were made to wait until the 37th minute to break the deadlock, with Wallyson volleying home from Jorge Wagner’s flicked header.

The impressive Nicolas Lodeiro released Wallyson with a sumptuous through ball in the 67th minute and the 25-year-old striker burst forward before cutting inside a defender to score.

Wallyson completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes remaining, again getting in behind Quito’s defence and picking up Elias’s pass before squeezing the ball past visiting goalkeeper Rolando Ramirez.

Henrique wrapped up Botafogo’s win with a goal in injury-time.
