The Brazilian left-back suffered an abductor muscle injury in just the 12th minute of the Copa del Rey second-leg match against Athletic Club Bilbao, resulting in the 28-year-old being stretchered from the pitch.

Currently in good form, and at a crucial period for those hoping to secure a place in Luis Felipe Scolari’s World Cup squad, the former Figueirense star will now face at least six weeks on the sidelines whilst he recovers from the injury suffered to his right buttock.

As well as missing Brazil’s next friendly against South Africa on 5 March, he will miss three games against rivals Real Madrid and at least one against Milan in the Champions League.

The injury rules out any move to Manchester United as had been speculated in the transfer window.
