World Cup stadium change?
The director of OAS Arenas, Carlos Eduardo Paes Barreto, has said that FIFA have approached him about the possibility of Arena Grêmio substituting Curitiba’s Arena Baixada for the World Cup
Despite the approach, he said that the chances of it happening were unlikely due to logistical problems and the presence of more viable options, namely the distribution of the games among the other 11 host cities.
Carlos Eduardo Paes Barreto made the comments last Saturday, in conversations with reporters on the eve of the first test event of the Arena das Dunas in Natal.
“FIFA came to us for a consultation, an informal thing, because we have a good relationship. I think it is a very remote option. The stadium is ready, but the whole logistics things would be tricky now,” said the director of OAS, which manages Grêmio’s stadium as well as the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador and the Arena das Dunas in Natal.
The Arena da Baixada in Curitiba is due to host four games: Iran v Nigeria, Honduras v Ecuador, Australia v Spain and Russia v Algeria.
