Álvaro Pereira made his São Paulo debut on Sunday against Oeste FC in the Campeonato Paulista and helped his new side earn a second win of the season.

The 28-year-old was hugely impressive throughout his team’s 2-1 win and assisted their second goal to cap a fantastic debut in Brazil.

After the game he spoke about his happiness at making his debut and also noted the need to improve as the season progress.

Lance quoted Pereira who said: “I liked the intensity of the team. But I have to improve a bit still.

“We have to keep improving going forward, we have a team that can do good in this tournament.”

The signing of the loan star from Italian giants Inter Milan has been celebrated greatly by Tricolor fans but the Uruguayan insisted he was just another member of the team.

He rejected claims that he was a star and looked ahead to an important year with São Paulo.

Pereira added: “I’ll follow training to improve as a whole team. But I said that I am only one more.

“I will not take the place of anyone and I’m not the star. I hope it will be a big year for us.”
