Landon Donovan praises São Paulo striker Luis FabianoThe 33-year-old has 28 international goals -
Currently with Team USA at their training camp in São Paulo, the attacking midfielder recalls how the Brazilian ‘destroyed’ them with two goals in Brazil’s 3-2 victory in the 2009 Confederations Cup final.
After opening up a two-goal lead in the first-half, the Americans were then pegged back by two goals from Luis Fabiano before Lúcio sealed victory for the South Americans.
“I remember Luis Fabiano really well from the Confederations Cup in 2009. We were winning 2-0 at half-time and really thought that we were going to beat Brazil. But soon after returning for the second-half he scored an incredible goal. Shortly after, he scored another and levelled the tie. For us, the hope ended there. He destroyed us – totally changed the game,” said the American in Thursday’s press conference at Team USA’s training camp in Barra Funda.
The 31-year-old is now hoping to get the opportunity to face Brazil once again.
“For me it would be a dream to play against Brazil, because this would mean that we’d got through the first round. It’s our expectation but we have a difficult group.”
