The President of Botafogo has declared that the club tried to sign Ivorian Didier Drogba from Turkish side Galatasaray to coincide with what would have been the end of Clarence Seedorf’s contract this summer.

Mauricio Assumpcao told lancenet.com plans were already afoot to compensate for the exit of Seedorf- assuming that he stayed until the end of his contact. Of course, the Dutch veteran has since gone on to his first managerial post at Italian side AC Milan, but Assumpcao claims that talks with Drogba did happen.

“The idea was to have Seedorf to the middle of the year and then have another worldwide player.”

“We started talking at the end of the year (2013) but he renewed with Galatasaray for two more seasons with astronomical salaries.”

With Botafogo having to seemingly replace the void left by Seedorf’s departure, it will be interesting to see who their next marquee target is.
