New Roma signing Michel Bastos has been forced to apologise to Lazio fans after holding up a scarf that had an offensive slogan written on it.

The Brazil international, who was unveiled ahead of Roma’s 1-0 Coppa Italia quarter-final win against Juventus on Tuesday, was thrown the scarf to wear from the stands.

Bastos insists he was not aware what was written on the garment and has apologised for his actions.

“I never wanted to disrespect anyone,” he posted on Twitter. “What happened yesterday was a misunderstanding.

“I apologise to the team and to the fans of Lazio.

“I was thrown a scarf, and only afterwards did I see that there was an insult on it.

“Thank you for all your messages. I’m upset with what happened.”
