Brazilian midfielder Ederson will miss the rest of the season after scans confirmed the injury he sustained against Udinese on Sunday was as bad as first feared.

The Lazio player, 28, has ruptured tendons in his thigh and is expected not to return to training for six months. He was the subject of a similar fate at his previous club Lyon.

The doctor in charge of Ederson, Roberto Bianchini, told globalpost.com: “The lad suffered the same injury as in the past , but this time it’s his right thigh.”

“He will require surgery and will be operated on by the same specialist who tended to him in Lyon. We’ve agreed to have the surgery there.”

“He will be out for a long time , about five or six months . It is major surgery.”

Ederson was capped by Brazil in 2010 in a friendly against USA and made over 100 appearances for Lyon between 2008 and 2012, before his move to the Italian capital with Lazio.
