AS Roma defender Maicon has backed his veteran Italian teammates Francesco Totti and Morgan De Sanctis for selection ahead of the World Cup by insisting: “For me, age doesn’t matter.”

Speaking with forzaitalianfootball.com, the Brazilian right-back, who himself still harbours ambitions of making Luiz felipe Scolari’s final squad, continued: “Totti has never ceased to show his quality as a player.”

“And the same goes for De Sanctis- I think they both deserve to go to the World Cup.”

The Italy duo have been in impressive form so Roma this season and the team currently sit second in Serie A, behing perennial contenders Juventus. Iconic Totti has amassed only 58 caps for his nation but is highly revered in his homeland and even at the age of 37, could be considered an ‘X-Factor’ option. Goalkeeper De Sanctis , a year younger, has represented Italy on six occasions.
